1 Corinthians 3:4-9

"For when one says, "I follow Paul," and another, "I follow Apollos," are you not mere men?

What, after all, is Apollos? And what is Paul? Only servants, through whom you came to believe—as the Lord has assigned to each his task. I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. The man who plants and the man who waters have one purpose, and each will be rewarded according to his own labor. For we are God's fellow workers; you are God's field, God's building."

8 days in the USA

Well, we've been in the USA eight days...only eight days? It seems like much longer than that...but we arrived last Thursday at JFK International airport, tired, emotional, and

After an unfortunate mishap with our flight to from JFK to Buffalo, this was our welcome to the US:

We missed our connecting flight due to the lack of airport transport to our connecting gate...we walked about a mile outside the airport with two carts loaded with our ten 50 lb. bags to our next terminal...and arrived about ten minutes too late! :(
BOOOOO!!

Good thing I had packed a blanket in our carry on and the kids had brought their pillows! We were very thankful for the 24-hour Dunkin Donuts in the airport!

We finally made it to Buffalo:

We made it just in time to enjoy the fall leaves...

We've also enjoyed seeing the grandparents, although haven't taken any pictures with them yet...

But rest assured, more to come later!

Eight days have flown by.

The Lord has blessed us beyond belief. While our hearts are full of love for our Costa Rican family, we are truly enjoying being with family and friends here and are thankful to Jesus for His perfect plan for our life...

Thank you for your continued prayers for our family during this transition time...

9 days...

Only nine more days of these beautiful sunrises...Never fails that each day brings a new sunrise with its own beautiful colors and clouds and special way of waking up the day.

Only nine more days of seeing these same white birds flying over Villarreal towards Avellanas each morning and then back over Villarreal towards Tamarindo each afternoon...Never fails- each day they fly over and then return.

Only nine more days of hearing the congos (howler monkeys) and the roosters shout back and forth as the day just begins to wake  up. The louder the monkeys get, the louder the roosters get.

Only nine more days of the sweet morning song of the birds that live around us and visit each morning. Only nine more days of watching Matt fill the hummingbird feeder each morning and watching as the tiny little hummingbirds buzz him and greet him in the mornings.

Only nine more days of brilliant sunsets like these two...Never fails that each day the sky's canvas closes the day in a new, different and brilliant way.

Only nine more days of PlayaTama, bathing suits, and days on the beach we'll never forget...Never fails that a day at the beach brings rest, fun, and unforgettable memories.

We have only nine more days in Costa Rica. I see today's date. I see the calendar and realize the number of days from today until next Thursday...but my mind will not accept the fact that there are only nine days left. I go about the day making preparations, packing, setting aside this or that for this person or that person...all part of having only nine days left...but not stopping to consider how few the days are.

We've enjoyed this:

...and this:

Only nine more days of these faces...

Only nine more days of working with a fantastic and amazing group of believers. Never fails the way the Lord chooses those who bear His fruit...these are some of His finest fruit-bearers...
(sorry this one is sideways...)

Only nine more days of these precious little ones...

Amidst many good-bye dinners with friends from the community and our church and seeing all of 'our kids' one last time...it never fails to remind us of God's perfect plan for our lives. No matter how much pain I feel right now as I say good-bye to true friends, I would never trade opening my heart to them and sharing life with them.

I have taken much time remembering...and many things are still to be kept between the Lord and I. I'm making the switch this next week. I've remembered. God has blessed me beyond what I can share right now. He has used this tiny little barrio and its dirt roads and its bugs and its strange idiosyncrasies and its culture and its drunks and its drugs and its children and its birds and its beaches and its people...to change me. So now I'm rejoicing. I will rejoice in the Lord. Always. I will rejoice. He is good. He is good. All the time. He is good!

We have nine days left.

Then a new chapter begins.

I have a lifetime of rejoicing.

I have a lifetime of witnessing time after time God continue in His faithfulness. HE never fails. I have seen day after day the sun rise- each day is different. I have seen day after day the sun set- each evening different. I have grown closer and closer to the people here- each one different. I've been on countless beaches- each one different. The same God has allowed me all of these things. When everything else id different, He is not different. When everything else changes, He never changes. When everything else fails me, He is Faithful. When everything around me is bad, He is Good. When everyone around me is hurtful, He is Loving. When I am weak, He is Mighty.

He is GOD!

Rejoice in HIM!

Ali mu gulu

Today, we went and picked Betty up and took her to the church to meet Eddy, Pastor Phil and Rebecca, and to show her around. We also too her around the community, and to the grocery store. She is so easy going and smiles all the time! She remarks often how similar life is here to life in Uganda. She was a little shocked at the prices and how much more expensive things are here, however. She had fun learning new fruits and veggies.

This afternoon, Betty was able to come with us to Potter's Field. We introduced her to Don Victor and Helyi and Erika. And, of course, the kids. She is doing her best to use the little Spanish she knows, but her smile breaks barriers like nothing else!

Matt asked her if she wouldn't mind teaching the kids some words in her native language, Luganda. She eagerly agreed. It was a fun lesson and the kids enjoyed it...as did the adults! She also taught us words in the language commonly spoken in the more rural areas, called Luo.

Then she taught us a song in Luganda. It was so much fun and all the kids LOVED it! Some of the kids wanted to teach Betty a song in Spanish so they taught her Jesus Loves Me (Jesús me ama). She picked it up and by the end was singing along with them!

We might even get ehr to teach the ladies the song tomorrow at worship practice and might be able to sing it on Sunday morning!

Ali mu gulu (He's in heaven)
Ne mu nyanja (And in the sea)
Yatonda egulu ne nsi (He made heaven and earth)
Era ali mu nze (And he's in me)
Anyimusa we mba musaba (He lifts me up when I pray)
Tayinze ku ndeka wo Yesu (He'll never leave me alone)
Ali nange (He's with me)

Chorus:
Tayinza ku ndeka wo Yesu (He'll never leave me alone)
Ali nange (He's with me)
Tayinza ku ndeka wo Yesu wange (My Jesus will never leave me alone)
Ali nange (He's with me)

We are so enjoying having her here and look forward to the next three weeks with her.

Welcoming Betty

Yesterday, Matt and I and the girls picked up Betty Abang, who is part of the administrative team of Potter's Field Ministries in Entebbe, Uganda. Betty has spent the past three months in Montana at Potter's Field Ranch being discipled, trained, encouraged, and built up by PFM staff and pastors there. Betty will be returning to Uganda next month to begin full time service with PFM and Calvary Chapel Entebbe. She is here to learn, observe, and glean from the minsitry and staff here, as well as serve. We feel extremely blessed to have her here with us and we are certain we will learn and glean much from her.

As we drove into Liberia after picking her up from the airport, she commented several times about the vegetation, the mango trees, and other scenery that reminded her of her home in Uganda. At one point she said with a big smile on her face, "This is so strange to see so much that is familiar to me. It makes me remember my home."

We asked her where she'd like to eat and offered a few of the popular places that are 'treats' for us when we go into the city like McDonald's, Pizza hut, Burger King. She laughed and said, "Oh no. I would just like some rice and beans please!" We laughed, died to our desire and plan for McDonald's (and air conditioning) and took her to a little soda (small diner) we are familiar with. There we all we able to order the typical 'casado' or lunch plate which consists of black beans, white rice, cabbage salad and your choice of meat. Our meat choices were two different types of chicken or breaded fish, which is kind of a special thing for it to be breaded. We all chose the fish. After her first few bites I asked her if she liked it and she said it was wonderful. I asked her what a typical meal in Uganda would be and she said, "This!" and pointed to her plate. She exclaimed the fish would be cooked differently, and with the bones still in it, but even down to the salad, everything was just about the same! We laughed at that and commented on how interesting that was. She asked for water to drink and I asked Matt if we should get her bottled, she laughed and said, "Maybe for the others that might be necessary, but for me, being from Uganda, it would just seem silly to drink bottled water! I think I will be fine!"

During the hour long car ride home, we talked about many things. I was was amazed at how normal it all felt- having just shared a meal with someone who lives halfway around the world, in a completely different culture, who has lived a life drastically different than mine, yet there in that small space, it all seemed so normal. We commented several times at God's goodness and grace and blessings in life.

Betty continued to comment on things about Costa Rica that she found similar to her home in Uganda. But, about halfway home, she laughed outloud and said, "One thing sure is different, you drive on the right side of the road here. That is very strange to me! In Uganda, we drive on the left side of the road." We all shared a good laugh after that observation.

It is an honor to welcome Betty to Costa Rica and to share the next three weeks with her. It is an honor to hear from her of God's majesty and work in Uganda. It is an honor to serve and live with young men and women from all over the USA who desire to give their lives to Jesus in service for his glory. It is an honor to serve Jesus in Costa Rica with Clavary Chapel, with Pastor Phil, with our PFK staff here, and to live and grow in Christ with a beautiful body of believers.

And the best part of all, is that we are all ordinary people. Meeting Betty and sharing with her and listening to her brings that point home. We have such different lives, yet our common bond is Christ. We all live ordinary lives in our perspective parts of the world. Yet we serve and extraordinary God. There is nothing special about our service, our lives, or even us. Yet, we have this treasure inside us that is more special than anything money can buy or this world can offer. That's Jesus Christ! We've devoted our lives to Him and our daily desire is to live in obedience to Him in order to bring glory to His name. Our obedience is no more important than the man who fights daily against his flesh and dies to His desire to pick up another drink; or the woman who commits her mouth, her words, and her thoughts daily to her LORD Jesus and pleads with Him to keep her tongue from evil and her lips from telling lies, as she fights the battle to refrain from gossipping. What about the faithful servant who honors the Lord by cleaning the church bathrooms, mopping the floors, cleaning the windows each Sunday morning before the church service starts. Or what about the widow who spends her days praying for the saints who faithfully serve Jesus- her church leaders, pastor, missionaries. She also prays diligently and fervently for those bound and held captive by the enemy. She wears down the carpet in the spot where her knees daily rest, she chooses prayer over idleness, and her God over the distractions of the world. Not one of these saints demonstrates obedience more important or more noteworthy than the other. Rather, it is Jesus shining through their obedience that radiates from them, making them shine like stars in the heavens.

We rejoice today to have Betty with us. We rejoice in JESUS because it by His blood we have been saved. Before we were born, He chose us and set us apart, He appointed us for His service. We've done nothing to deserve the life we lead. In fact, we've been rebellious, hard-hearted, and chosen our own way more times than we can count. Yet, He is rich in mercy, abounding in love, and full of grace. Praise be to God, our LORD, our Redeemer, our Savior and our King!!

May you be blessed today!

Betty with her rice and beans!

Welcome to Costa Rica, Betty!

Remembering through pictures

In an attempt to lessen the amount of weight we are taking back to the US, we've been going through pictures, scanning them, getting them stored on hard drives, so we do not have to take back hard copies. This has lead us to spend time reflecting on our past, what God has done, and allowed us to freely begin looking forward to the future. It has brought great joy to my heart to look back over the years and reflect on the goodness of our God. Here are a few pictures and captions as we continue on the journey of remebering...

Time to remember...again...

Well, it has been more than days and more than weeks since my first post on remembering...but well, for the one or two of you that read this little blog...I'm sure you know me well enough by now to know that is just how my life is :)

We are now much closer to the end of the Costa Rican adventure we've been on for the past five years. The house is becoming emptier by the day. The suitcases are lined up along the counter in the living area. The calendar is always by my side and we are constantly checking back with people to arrange the details of the last few weeks here and the first two months of our time in the US. The joy grows in our hearts each day as we think about seeing our family again. We find ourselves once again at a point in which we literally have no control over where God is taking us. We have walked as far as He has shown us and our waiting for the next set of instructions. Our joy is overflowing as we look around us here and see HIS work in the ministry. We see how He has changed the kids we minister to. I see their growth daily! I have learned to LOVE JESUS, HAVE FAITH in Him, LOVE those He brings into our lives, TEACH them to OBEY Him, and LET HIM work in their lives. That is what brings results. We've often been asked if it is all worth it...ripping our kids away from everything they knew, giving up the American Dream- the job, the house, the car(s)...moving to a place so backward in some of their ways that you find yourself constantly shaking your head...

Is it WORTH it?

YES. YES, it is worth it. Everything in our lives that might have been LOSS has been GAIN for Christ. Every time we 'sacrificed' in obedience to Him, it has been worth it! Every single time I am homesick, it is worth it- because my heart is really longing for the home I have waiting for me with HIM. Every single day that I think about leaving these precious kids and their families and our church here and all of our brothers and sisters in the faith...and the pain builds up and the tears well up in my eyes...I REMEMBER that it IS worth it!

Why? Because I am walking in obedience to His call and there is nothing that I can imagine that is better than that for me or for my life!

I remember more from that first year in Costa Rica than just language study. But that for sure stands out. When I look back, I never could have imagined being able to speak at the level at which I can now communicate. I make mistakes ALL the time even now, but the Lord has been so gracious to give me the ability to speak Spanish. If you would have asked me four years ago if I'd ever translate, i would have laughed. I remember the first time I tried and FAILED miserably. Yet, the Lord has clearly placed the desire and ability in my heart to do just that and it has become almost a weekly role for me, as we consistently have English-only speakers in the congregation who need translation. I praise God for ILE, the institute where we studied and for all my teachers. I praise God that HE lead us there and provided for our family to study there. I know that if you asked Matt if He would ever be leading worship or teaching in Spanish, he would have laughed at you. But praise be to God, He has allowed those things to come to pass. Matt has been leading worship for a couple months now during Wednesday night Bible studies and has taught some as well. Being able to disciple the kids and preparing for the lessons each week has been such a wonderful way the Lord has grown our ability to speak Spanish. The Lord has used Spanish to humble us multiple times over. It is never something we feel totally comfortable in, yet He has used it in our lives to bring glory to HIS name, to share the Gospel, and to make disciples. We have been so blessed by His plan for us to learn this language!

I remember so many different people, places, and events during our time in San Jose. It seems so long ago now. I remember our tiny little apartment next to Mark and Meg Kuzdas. And getting our cat, Cereal 'Gatita'. I remember the major slap in the face it was to see the liberties taken in advertising here and how so blatantly pornography has become nothing more than a daily part of life here. There was so much new- culture, driving, learning public transportation, what church looked like here, how the 'nursery' was nothing more than pulling the tote full of toys into the little tiny storage room and hoping that none of the kids got hurt on all the junk that was in the room. I remembering having to learn quick what it meant to be 'street smart' and how nothing I could have ever learned in Rossville or Frankfort was going to prepare me for living in a city of a million people. I remember trying to adjust to the constant traffic and people everywhere.  I remember learning the quickest route to the bread store, the grocery store, and to the language school. I also remember that I had to learn the sidewalks well and remember which ones became slippery slides when it rained and which ones were safe to walk on. I remember meeting so many different people and hearing their stories and having the privilege of sharing life with them for a time. I remember being introduced to poverty. I had lived such a sheltered life. I'd never been rich, but I'd never been so desperate as the people I was meeting from the ministry areas.

So much happened in those first two years, it truly is a miracle that we survived and for that reason it is ONLY by the GRACE of God that we did. I remember when we felt so much pressure. I remember when we were so close to giving up...and how God in His faithfulness, took the smidgen of faith- the small mustard-seed sized speck we had left and used it to open up the doors to a whole new life we had never anticipated. He moved us to Guanacaste- pure country!

I remember when we visited a place called Guacimo - dirt roads, outhouses, cooking over and open fire...and a few weeks afterwards Mark K. looked at both of us and said 'You guys loved it there, didn't you?' That was the beginning of many confirmations for us that the Lord was calling us into something new. We began praying for a few different places in Costa Rica...and decided  to go to  Tamarindo first because we were certain that it was NOT where God was calling us. We thought we'd cross it off our list.

Well, we stayed several days, but came home a day earlier than anticipated because we were absolutely positive of the Lord's will in our lives. Villarreal was to be our new home! Matt went back a few weeks later and spent several days looking for a home for us and finally found one- THE home picked especially by the Lord. We moved a month later!

I remember the very first night in our new home. I remember how the neighbors sat on their porch and stared as we unloaded box after box after box...And how they had cleaned the entire place for us. I remember standing in the kitchen that night after all the boxes were unloaded, sweat dripping off of me...thinking "What have we done?" There were strange noises, bugs, geckos, more bugs, no bars, roosters, did I mention BUGS? and the heat- it was so oppressive! I remember telling the Lord, bitterly honest, that I was pretty sure I was not going to be able to do this! There had been no bugs in San Jose, privacy because of all the bars and walls, and the temperature was just about perfect all year round. Guanacaste was a completely different world! One of the first few nights Matt and I were outside after the kids were in bed and we were just amazed as we stood in the front yard and gazed at the night sky and all the stars. It was beautiful! The Lord reminded us then of His faithfulness, of His provision, and of His sovereignty.

We still had no idea of what was to come, but He did.

Check back later for more of the story...
