1 Corinthians 3:4-9

"For when one says, "I follow Paul," and another, "I follow Apollos," are you not mere men?

What, after all, is Apollos? And what is Paul? Only servants, through whom you came to believe—as the Lord has assigned to each his task. I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. The man who plants and the man who waters have one purpose, and each will be rewarded according to his own labor. For we are God's fellow workers; you are God's field, God's building."

16 years

Today we celebrate sixteen years of marriage.
When we got married we were so young. We really did not know what we were doing...but thankfully God did. Thankfully, before the beginning of time, God our Father had perfectly planned out our lives together. And we are so thankful! Our years together are full of  many, many fun times; great joy and difficult moments. We have walked through very low times, and also great victories. We've been together through times of plenty and through times of scarcity. We have walked together through sickness and through health.

Today, I look at this picture and am so overjoyed at God's goodness. He is so faithful. He never walked away from us, even when we wanted to give up. He has remained faithful and has restored our marriage. He has remained faithful and has strengthened our marriage. He has remained faithful and has made our marriage into something I had only once dreamed about.

There have been so many who have walked with us, beside us, and sometimes have carried us through difficult moments. We thank all of you who have been influential in our lives and marriage. We are thankful for our parents who gave us life! We are thankful for those who have prayed for our marriage over the years. Thank you- and please keep praying!

Would you join us today in celebrating God's faithfulness, goodness, and his grace as we celebrate our marriage today?

We're still alive!

So sorry it has been so long since we have updated here. We're still alive!

Life really has been that busy. We've seen IGNITE Class 7 complete their training here in Antigua and now they are serving in their respective fields. IC6 is now serving in their home churches, after having completed their re-entry in Montana. We've experienced our first English Camp here on the property as well as the Central American Pastor's and Leader's conference. Our moms came for a visit and I feel confident saying we conquered Antigua! Haha. We had a great visit with them and are thankful that they are best friends and travel buddies. It is such a blessing to have moms who love us enough to follow us all over Central America! :)

We are so thankful for what we see the Lord doing all around us. He is working in the lives of the students here on campus- both the IGNITE interns, as well as the Bible College students. He is working in the hearts and lives of the staff on campus. As He works and moves in our own hearts, we see that He chooses to use us in the lives of others.  We don't know why, haha, but He does. The church is growing, as well, both in numbers but more importantly spiritually. Each week, I hear testimony of the way God is working in the lives of church members. And the way He chooses to work is not through easy circumstances. There are really hard things happening in the lives of people here, and in the midst of those hard things, God is working and using those very situations to draw His people close to him, change them, and ultimately to transform their lives.

"I have chosen the way of truth; I have set my heart on your laws. I hold fast to your statutes, O LORD; do not let me be put to shame. I run in the path of your commands, for you have set my heart free." Psalm 119:30-32

Yesterday I had two very different conversations with two very different women.  Both are struggling to let others in to the deepest parts of their hearts. The Lord laid it upon my heart to speak with, listen to, and pray for both of them. Both know the scriptures very well and have been 'in church' for many, many years. One chose to live out what we read in the verses above. One responded to the still, small voice of the Lord and opened up her heart yesterday, chose to run in what the Lord has set out before her, and consequently found freedom! The other sadly, responded to the Lord calling out to her by closing up her arms and her heart tight, like in a ball of tangled, knotted yarn. The Lord's presence was among us as tears flowed from her eyes, yet her hard was hard. Freedom was there- she just had to choose to run towards it. But instead I watched as her countenance changed and she ran away and not towards her Savior.

"Your decrees are the theme of my song wherever I lodge. In the night I remember your name, O LORD, and I will keep your law. This has been my practice; I obey your precepts." Psalm 119:54-56

I asked her if she takes time every day to read her bible and she said no. She had moved recently and did not like her new home and had not even unpacked. She just did not have time to sit down and read. I prayed for her and exhorted her to be obedient to the word, make things right with people with whom she was angry- starting with God. And as she walked away my heart sank, knowing that her heart was still hardened.

What I take away from these two verses that the Lord has given me the past few days in my own devotional time is that we do each have a choice. We must choose the way in which we are going to walk. There are two ways- with God or away from him. There is a consequence of both ways.

Towards God leads to freedom- no mater what your circumstances of life are. When our hearts are set on or purposed to obey God's Word, we will find freedom. We will find life.

If you are not walking towards God, on the path He sets out before you, you are walking away from him. As a friend of mine says, we need to read the scripture backwards sometimes to understand what is there. When we read backwards in these texts we see that if we do not follow God we do not have freedom. Which means we are in captivity. Bondage. Death.

Bondage?
Death?

Why? Because the word of God is alive and active. It brings us life and moves us to application- action.

Have you taken time today to sit and read God's word? Will you stop for a moment and listen for His voice? Will you obey what He says when He speaks?

If you have about an hour, take the time to listen to this teaching from a friend of mine. You will be blessed!

Happy 10th birthday, Audrey Ann!

"This is the day! This is the day, that the Lord has made, that the Lord has made! We will rejoice! We will rejoice! And be glad in it, and be glad in it!"

Today we celebrate the life of our third child, Audrey Ann!

We love you so much, Audrey! The joy you bring to our lives cannot be measured. You have brought laughter to our family, fun, and adventure! Your curiosity about life, nature, animals, and about how things work is fascinating and often brings the rest of us new perspective.

You love giraffes, the color purple, and rice and beans! You also love to sweep, run and exercise, and pretending! Since you were very lithe, we would find you off in a corner somewhere talking up a storm with some imaginary audience...and we still today find you doing that! There are so many things you would like to do in your life that you cannot decide just exactly what it is you will be when you grow up...but that's ok because you have some time to figure that out!

Since we've moved here to Guatemala, you have grown up so much. Yes, you have gotten taller and you wear a bigger size in clothes and shoes...but you have grown up in who you are and more importantly in who God created you to be. Your Spanish has blossomed and you speak it all the time now. You also have gotten more comfortable interacting with new people and in new places...both things that used to be really hard for you. You still hold back some in the beginning of a new situation, but you are stepping out more and more and it si so exciting to see you do new things and interact in new situations.

You make us laugh, play jokes on us, and tell us jokes all the time. You make silly faces and have one-liner comments that make us laugh so hard our stomaches hurt! You bring us great joy, Audrey!

These two little guys have become little brothers to you and your sister and brother. They love you all so much and it brings us great joy to see you all live life together every day. We are so thankful that God brought all of us together!

Over the years, you have lived in many different places. Jesus has blessed our family incredibly by taking us places we had never imagined. You have always been along for the ride...and as you grow older in years, we see God working in your own heart. You are beginning to see His plan in your life, too!

We are incredibly blessed to be your parents, Audrey! We love you so much. But your Heavenly Father loves you even more than we ever could. He has a plan that is perfect and one that is just for you! He will never leave you, Audrey. He is always with you. He wants you to walk in that plan; to be strong and courageous, trusting in Him and leaning on Him and doing all things in His strength. He cares for you. He loves you. His love will never run out. He will never give up on you. He has given you His word so that you might know Him more through it and learn His ways.

Happy Birthday, Ethan Matthew!

I remember this day. You were not many months into this life of yours. This is how you have lived most of your life, with a smile on your face, laughter spilling out through that smile. You were such an easy going baby. We went everywhere with you, even sat outside a Def Leopard concert with you at the Indiana State Fair when you about three months old!

As a toddler, you were full of life, a bundle of energy, always ready to learn, curious, and very protective of your sister, Isabelle. You two were inseparable. You did everything together. You were best buds. You loved Batman, Spiderman, Woody and Buzz, and somewhere in those toddler years, you found your love of Legos.

When Audrey was born, you were really beginning to develop your own personality, do things on your own, and you had started pre-school, which you loved. Do you remember how you used to stand at the window in the play room and watch the bus go by...in your diaper with your Winnie the Pooh backpack on? You wanted to go to school so much. You were so excited when we went I told you that you finally were going to be able to go. And you loved it from day one! That first day I dropped you off was one of my most difficult days as a mom...the first bit of letting you grow into your own person, on your own. You loved having two sisters. You loved making Audrey laugh. But by now you had began making your own friends, too. Rob became your best buddy in those early years.

When we moved to Costa Rica, you were ready! You had already spent a year in kindergarten and had done so well. God had been preparing you during that year for what was to come, even though none of knew it yet. Three-fourths of your kindergarten class spoke Spanish as their first language. And you made some good buddies that year. God gave us a wonderful family as neighbors whose first language was Spanish. Do you remember Enrique? You had a lot of fun with him. When we moved away from Frankfort, it was very difficult. But out of all of us, you made the transition the smoothest. You made instant friends with the Nicaraguan and Costa Rican boys in the churches we served with. Your dad and I still remember seeing you sitting across the street from the church playing cars with Elvis, talking, on our first or second week in the country. You had no fear, no stress, no worries. You picked up Spanish as if you had spoken it all your life. Do you remember that time Dad and I were doing our homework and we were so frustrated because we did not understand...and you turned around and gave us the answer like it was nothing?

You eased into life in the ministry, despite a hectic schedule, lots of travel, and two sisters who did not adjust quite as well as you. There was so much change in those first two years in Costa Rica, so much stress on our family, and things were not always smooth, but you kept us laughing. You loved the school you went to that first year and made some great friends. But it was in those first two years that the world began to press in on you and you learned some things the hard way, not the way we would have chosen for you.

We moved to the Guanacaste region of the country and this was the first time in your life that you really struggled. It was the first time you came face to face with having to choose for yourself whom you would serve in this life. You had to choose to believe, even when it was hard, or you had fear. You began to understand that to choose your own way was to disobey God and that was sin. The world began to press in on you more and more. God provided for you though. He began to put other men in your life at this crucial time, like Pastor Phil and Eddy, who love you so much. He also allowed us to begin serving with Potter's Field and we started PFK in Villarreal. There you got a much better picture of what ministry is all about. As you began to serve yourself, you began to develop a love for children and you also began to understand how much you have to rely on God to be your source of strength...

You learned about forgiveness, restoration, and what it means to be a true friend with Joel. Remember  how you were once enemies, but how how we saw God work in him and how you became such good friends?

You overcame so much in those years in Villarreal. And leaving was the first and most difficult test of your faith. You had found home there. You had your dogs. You had friends. And you did not want to leave. But you also trusted that your Dad and I believed with all of our hearts that leaving Costa Rica was what we needed to do to be obedient. You knew that we really did not want to leave either. You saw our pain. But you also saw our joy in knowing that if God was calling us to leave a place and people we all loved so very much, he must have something so incredible for us. We believed that.

I love this picture of us tarn when we visited Niagara Falls on our way to Indiana after leaving Costa. Here we were, literally with all we had in suitcases, we'd been up all night in the New York JFK airport...yet, arms open, ready for whatever the Lord had for us next...we had no idea, did we?

We spent a month in Indiana before we took off on our cross-country adventure moving to Montana. These two pictures remind me that as we continue on in life, and as you grow in years, more and more you will be making your own decisions. Sometimes, those decisions will take you on a way that turns out favorable. Sometimes, they won't turn out so favorably. But as you learn the RIGHT way, the ONLY way and how to find it and WHO the One is who will be your continuous guide, your dad and I will be right here, just a few steps behind you, watching, praying, and ready to steer you back when you've gotten a little bit off the path. As I watch you grow, I realize more and more the plans the Lord has for you are great. I don't know what they are or where He will lead you, but I do know that all these years we have prayed for God to reveal His perfect plan to you, that He work out in your life the plan for you that is good and meant to bring you peace and not meant to harm you, we see Him doing that now. I know He is answering those prayers in real tangible ways, in these very years.

No matter what God's plan is for you, it will never be easy to be away from those that love you most who remain far away, like these guys. Even though your time with them each year is so short, you always make the most of it. They love you so much. It never was your dad and I's plan to live so far away from your grandparents, but God has always provided in awesome ways for us to visit them and for them to visit us. We are so thankful for them and for their love for you and your sisters.

We're also so very thankful for these dear people who God has placed in our lives. We believe they are part of the perfect plan He has for you in some way, Ethan. They love you so very much.

Montana was full of firsts for all of us, new friends, and fun adventures! None of ever could have known how much we would love Montana. We never could have imagined the things God was going to allow us to experience, the people that He was going to bring into our lives, or how very difficult it was going to be to leave there...

But prayers were already being answered and God was working out the next steps of His perfect plan for our family, and for you, my son.

We arrived in Antigua, Guatemala last June and none of really knew how very different it was going to be from Costa Rica. The Spanish was very different, so many new words, the culture was so different, and there was not one part of life that was even similar to Costa Rica...but God is good and faithful..and you transitioned much like you always have. Once the July IGNITE class arrived, you really found your way. God has blessed you so richly Ethan both with the young men as well as the older men He is placing in your life.

God is giving you such wonderful examples to watch as they live out obedience in their daily lives. Remember them and do as they have done...keep your eyes Jesus.

Love Jesus with all of your heart, all of your soul, all of your strength and all of your mind. Live out that love by by serving Him, not for glory or honor or position, but motivated by your love for Him. Remember that you are deeply and intimately loved by Him. He bought you for a great price. He rescued you out of the mirky depths and is raising you up into the man He has planned and called you to be. He will continue to transform you as long as you remain in Him and yielded to His will for you.

As for your dad and I, we are so very thankful that God gave us you. Fourteen years have flown by for us. I can fill all of this space with pictures and memories and there are so many more. Yet, here you are, taller than me, your feet are bigger than your dad's, your voice is changing, you are maturing, and you are growing and changing every day. I cried last night as I pondered all of this. Not tears of sadness or despair, but joy because you are a gift from God, as your middle name suggests. We love you so much!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, TITO!
